Yeast Extract (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Cell Wall with Beta-Glucan

Also known as: Baker's yeast extract, S. cerevisiae cell wall, Yeast beta-glucan, Functional yeast extract

B
Evidence

Yeast extract cell wall is a source of beta-glucans, polysaccharides that have demonstrated immune-modulating properties in research. The standardized 50% beta-glucan content provides a consistent dose of compounds studied for supporting immune function and inflammatory response.

Primary uses

  • Immune system support
  • Inflammatory response modulation
  • Gut health promotion

How it works

  • Beta-glucan binding to pattern recognition receptors (Dectin-1) on immune cells
  • Activation of macrophages and neutrophils
  • Modulation of inflammatory mediators
  • Support of barrier function in gastrointestinal tract

Dosage

Typical range
500-2000 mg daily (typically providing 250-1000 mg beta-glucan)
Timing
Can be taken with or between meals
With food
No requirement; food may enhance absorption of some polysaccharides
Duration
Typically used on an ongoing basis; benefits may take 2-4 weeks to manifest
Special populations
Generally recognized as safe; may be limited in individuals with yeast sensitivities or active yeast infections, though cell wall extracts are generally well-tolerated

Forms

  • Powder· 70/100
  • Capsule· 70/100
  • Tablet· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Mild gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals
  • Rare allergic reactions in yeast-sensitive persons

Contraindications

  • Active Candida infection (use with caution)
  • Severe yeast allergy
  • Immunocompromised individuals should consult healthcare provider before use

Evidence notes

Beta-glucans from yeast have moderate-to-good clinical evidence for immune support, particularly for upper respiratory infection reduction and immune marker modulation. However, evidence is less robust than for other well-established immune ingredients. Standardization to 50% beta-glucan provides stronger evidence basis than non-standardized yeast extract.

Grade B: Some human trials support key claims; further confirmation needed.
