Functional Yeast Extract (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Cell Wall
Also known as: Baker's yeast extract, Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall, Yeast beta-glucan, Nutritional yeast extract
Functional yeast extract is derived from baker's yeast cell walls and is standardized to contain beta-glucans, polysaccharides that may support immune function. Research suggests beta-glucans can enhance innate immune responses, though human clinical evidence remains limited.
Primary uses
- Immune system support
- Innate immune enhancement
- General wellness
How it works
- Beta-glucan binding to pattern recognition receptors (Dectin-1) on immune cells
- Activation of macrophages and natural killer cells
- Modulation of complement system
Dosage
- Typical range
- 500–2000 mg daily
- Timing
- Can be taken with or without food; consistent daily use recommended for immune benefits
- With food
- Optional; may be taken anytime
- Duration
- Intended for regular use; immune effects typically assessed over weeks to months
- Special populations
- Generally recognized as safe for most adults; limited safety data in pregnant/nursing women
Forms
- Capsule· 70/100
- Powder· 70/100
Safety
Common side effects
- Rare: mild digestive upset
- Rare: allergic reactions in yeast-sensitive individuals
Contraindications
- Yeast allergy or Saccharomyces sensitivity
- Severe immunocompromise (consult healthcare provider)
Evidence notes
Good mechanistic and in vitro evidence for beta-glucan immunomodulation. Some human studies show immune marker improvements (NK cell activity, cytokine production), but limited large-scale RCT data for clinical outcomes. Yeast extract extracts are less studied than purified beta-glucan isolates.
Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
