White Kidney Bean Extract (Phaseolus vulgaris)

Also known as: Phaseolus vulgaris extract, Kidney bean extract, Phase 2, Carb blocker

C
Evidence

White kidney bean extract contains alpha-amylase inhibitors that may reduce carbohydrate digestion and absorption. Research shows modest effects on postprandial blood glucose and weight management, though clinical significance remains limited.

Primary uses

  • Carbohydrate digestion reduction
  • Postprandial glucose management
  • Weight management support
  • Blood sugar support

How it works

  • Alpha-amylase inhibition reduces starch breakdown
  • Delays carbohydrate absorption in small intestine
  • May reduce postprandial glucose spikes

Dosage

Timing
With main meals containing carbohydrates
With food

Evidence notes

Multiple RCTs show modest benefits for glucose control and modest weight loss (~2-3 lbs over 8-12 weeks), but effect sizes are small and heterogeneous. Some studies funded by ingredient suppliers. Not suitable for A-B grade due to modest clinical magnitude and variable study quality.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
