Rephyl® (Piper nigrum) Extract

Also known as: black pepper extract, Piper nigrum fruit extract, beta-caryophyllene rich black pepper, Rephyll

C
Evidence

Rephyl® is a standardized black pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit extract concentrated for beta-caryophyllene (6%), a sesquiterpene with potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Limited human clinical evidence exists; most research is in vitro or animal models.

Primary uses

  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Neuroprotection
  • Cognitive support

How it works

  • CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonism (beta-caryophyllene)
  • Inhibition of NF-κB inflammatory pathway
  • TRPV1 and other nociceptor modulation

Dosage

Typical range
500-1500 mg daily (as standardized extract; approximately 30-90 mg beta-caryophyllene)
Timing
With meals for optimal absorption
With food
Recommended; fat-soluble compound absorption enhanced with food
Duration
No standard duration established; longer-term safety data lacking
Special populations
Pregnant/nursing women should consult healthcare provider; use in children not established

Forms

  • Capsule· 70/100
  • Powder· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Generally well-tolerated at typical doses
  • Rare: mild gastrointestinal upset

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to black pepper or related Piperaceae species
  • Caution with aspirin sensitivity or bleeding disorders (preliminary evidence for mild anticoagulant effect)

Evidence notes

Beta-caryophyllene shows promising in vitro and animal data for anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, but human clinical trials in humans are limited and small. Rephyl® as a proprietary standardized extract lacks dedicated RCT evidence in humans.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
