Perilla Extract (Perilla frutescens)
Also known as: Perilla frutescens aerial parts, Shiso extract, Perilla leaf extract, Perilla powder
Perilla frutescens is a traditional Asian herb containing rosmarinic acid and other polyphenols with potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Limited human clinical evidence exists; most research is preliminary or conducted in animal models.
Primary uses
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Antioxidant activity
- Respiratory health
- Allergy symptom management
How it works
- Rosmarinic acid-mediated inhibition of inflammatory pathways
- Antioxidant radical scavenging
- Potential modulation of allergic response and mast cell activation
Dosage
- Typical range
- 500–2,000 mg daily (extract powder basis)
- Timing
- With meals for optimal absorption and tolerability
- With food
- Recommended to reduce potential GI upset
- Duration
- Most human studies used perilla for 8–12 weeks; longer-term safety data limited
- Special populations
- Avoid in pregnancy/lactation without professional guidance; limited safety data in children
Forms
- Powder· 70/100
- Extract· 70/100
- Capsule· 70/100
- Leaf (dried)· 70/100
Safety
Common side effects
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea) at higher doses
- Allergic reactions (rare, in sensitized individuals)
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Perilla frutescens or Lamiaceae family plants
- Pregnancy and lactation (insufficient safety data)
- Bleeding disorders (theoretical risk due to anticoagulant properties in some studies)
Evidence notes
Most evidence is from in vitro and animal studies. A few small human trials suggest potential benefit for allergic rhinitis and respiratory symptoms, but sample sizes are limited and methodology variability is high. Insufficient robust RCT data for higher grading.
Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
