Serotonin Precursors
5-HTP vs L-Tryptophan
L-Tryptophan is one step further upstream; 5-HTP converts directly to serotonin — 5-HTP is faster, Tryptophan is safer.
Both supplement the body's serotonin production. L-Tryptophan is the amino acid you get from protein; the body converts it to 5-HTP (via tryptophan hydroxylase), then to serotonin. 5-HTP skips the rate-limiting step, so a 5-HTP dose raises serotonin faster and with less competition from other amino acids for transport into the brain.
Amino Acid
Direct serotonin precursor, one step closer than tryptophan. More potent for mood and appetite but requires more caution.
Typical dose: 50-200 mg daily
Main uses: Mood support · Appetite control · Sleep
Full 5-HTP profile →Amino Acid
Essential amino acid precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Supports mood and sleep through 5-HTP pathway.
Typical dose: 500-2000 mg daily
Main uses: Sleep · Mood support · Serotonin production
Full L-Tryptophan profile →When to pick 5-HTP
Pick 5-HTP for depression or mood adjuncts, appetite control, or acute sleep initiation. Dose: 100–300 mg/day. Effects emerge within hours to days. Don't combine with SSRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic drugs — serotonin syndrome risk.
When to pick L-Tryptophan
Pick L-Tryptophan when you want a gentler, more 'background' serotonin support. Dose: 500–2,000 mg/day. Safer at high doses than 5-HTP. Also serves as a niacin precursor at high intake.
Can you take them together?
Generally not combined — redundant. Never stack either with antidepressants or triptans without clinician oversight. See /interactions/5-htp-and-ssri for the serotonin syndrome risk profile.
FAQ
5-HTP vs L-Tryptophan: which is better?
L-Tryptophan is one step further upstream; 5-HTP converts directly to serotonin — 5-HTP is faster, Tryptophan is safer.
Is 5-HTP safer than L-Tryptophan?
Both have well-characterized safety profiles at the doses above. See each ingredient's dedicated page for specific contraindications. Always check the interaction checker before combining either with prescription medication.
Can I combine 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan?
