Ganoderma lucidum Extract (Fruiting Body)

Also known as: Reishi, Red Reishi, Lingzhi, Ganoderma extract

C
Evidence

Ganoderma lucidum (reishi) is a medicinal mushroom used traditionally in Asian medicine for stress and immune support. Modern research shows modest evidence for stress reduction and sleep quality, though study quality and standardization remain inconsistent.

Primary uses

  • Stress and anxiety reduction
  • Sleep quality improvement
  • Immune system support
  • Relaxation and adaptogenic effects

How it works

  • Bioactive polysaccharides and beta-glucans may modulate immune function
  • Triterpenes (luciderol, ganoderiol) may have sedative and anxiolytic properties
  • Potential modulation of stress hormones (cortisol) and HPA axis

Dosage

Typical range
1.5–3 g daily (extract); 1:1 extracts typically 1–3 g daily
Timing
Evening for sleep support; can be taken anytime for general stress management
With food
May be taken with or without food; fat may enhance absorption of lipophilic compounds
Duration
Benefits often emerge after 2–4 weeks of consistent use
Special populations
Safe for most adults; pregnant/nursing women should consult provider

Forms

  • Powder (1:1 extract)· 70/100
  • Capsule· 70/100
  • Tincture· 70/100
  • Whole fruiting body· 70/100
  • Standardized extract· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Mild gastrointestinal upset
  • Dizziness or dry mouth (rare)
  • Insomnia if taken in excess or too late in day

Contraindications

  • Bleeding disorders (may have mild anticoagulant effects)
  • Scheduled surgery (discontinue 2 weeks prior)
  • Immunosuppressive therapy (theoretical concern; consult physician)

Evidence notes

Multiple human studies suggest benefits for anxiety and sleep, but methodological quality is often poor, sample sizes modest, and standardization of extracts varies widely. Fruiting body extracts show more promising data than mycelium. Insufficient evidence for strong A or B grade.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
