Amino Acid

Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (2:1)

Also known as: Arginine AKG, Arginine 2-AKG, Arginine AKG 2:1

C
Evidence

A chelated form combining L-arginine with alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) in a 2:1 ratio, designed to enhance nitric oxide production while supporting cellular energy metabolism. The AKG component may provide additional mitochondrial and protein synthesis benefits.

Primary uses

  • Nitric oxide production
  • Vasodilation and exercise performance
  • Muscle protein synthesis support
  • Cellular energy metabolism

How it works

  • L-arginine serves as NO synthase substrate for nitric oxide production
  • Alpha-ketoglutarate functions as a TCA cycle intermediate supporting energy production
  • AKG may enhance protein synthesis and reduce protein breakdown
  • Improved NO-mediated blood flow delivery to working muscles

Dosage

Typical range
2-6 grams daily (providing 1.3-4 g arginine and 0.65-2 g AKG)
Timing
30-60 minutes pre-workout or divided with meals
With food
May be better tolerated with food; no strong evidence for optimal timing
Duration
4-8 weeks of consistent use typically required to assess benefits
Special populations
Same cautions as L-arginine; AKG generally well-tolerated

Forms

  • Chelated AKG complex· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Gastrointestinal upset (less common than free arginine HCl due to chelation)
  • Nausea
  • Mild abdominal discomfort

Contraindications

  • Active herpes simplex infection
  • Recent myocardial infarction
  • Severe renal impairment

Evidence notes

Limited direct RCT evidence specifically for AKG 2:1 form. Most data derive from standalone arginine or AKG studies. The synergistic benefit of the combination is theoretically sound but not robustly established in humans.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
