Adaptogens & supplements for stress

Ashwagandha, magnesium, theanine — what's supported and what's hype.

Support, not a substitute

Supplements are the last layer, not the foundation — they can't replace sleep, exercise, connection, and boundaries. With that said, a few have real support for stress:

Stress supplements with the most support

  • Ashwagandha — the best-studied adaptogen for stress; several RCTs show reduced perceived stress and cortisol.
  • L-theanine — promotes calm focus without sedation; pairs well with stressful, attention-heavy work.
  • Magnesium — if you're low, repletion supports relaxation and sleep; stress depletes it.
  • Rhodiola — some evidence for stress-related fatigue; quality is more mixed.
