Zone 2: building your aerobic base
Easy cardio is the unglamorous engine that powers everything else.

Easy on purpose
'Zone 2' is steady cardio at an easy, conversational pace — you could talk but not sing. It feels almost too easy to matter, which is exactly why people skip it. But it's where your body builds mitochondria and gets better at burning fat for fuel, which underpins endurance, metabolic health, and recovery.
Zone 2 sits at roughly what percentage of your maximum heart rate?
Somewhere between 40 and 95 % max HR.
Reveal the answer →
~60–70%
Zone 2 is roughly 60–70% of max heart rate — easy enough to hold a conversation. A simple field test: if you can speak in full sentences but wouldn't want to sing, you're about right. Most people accidentally train too hard for Zone 2 and too easy for intervals.
Why easy builds the engine
Easy cardio teaches your body to make more 'engines' (mitochondria) and burn fat efficiently, so everyday effort feels easier and you recover faster.
How it works →
Sustained low-intensity work maximizes mitochondrial biogenesis and fat oxidation in slow-twitch fibers without the fatigue cost of high intensity, raising your aerobic 'floor' and improving metabolic flexibility (how readily you switch between fat and carbohydrate for fuel).
What the studies show →
Endurance-training literature consistently shows large mitochondrial density and fat-oxidation adaptations from high-volume low-intensity work; elite endurance athletes spend the majority of their training time at this easy intensity (the 'polarized training' model).
How should true Zone 2 cardio feel?
- All-out — you can barely breathe
- Easy enough to hold a conversation but not sing
- Completely effortless, like sitting
- Painful in the muscles within a minute

B.Easy enough to hold a conversation but not sing
Zone 2 is conversational: you can talk in full sentences but wouldn't want to sing. It feels easy by design — that's what lets you accumulate the volume that builds your aerobic base.
