Sauna: does it work?
A hot, dry room at 80–100°C. Frequent use is linked to fewer heart deaths in Finnish studies: the best long-term data on this shelf, but observational.
What it is
A traditional sauna heats the air and stones to about 80–100°C (176–212°F) at low humidity; throwing water on the stones briefly raises the steam. The category covers indoor cabins and outdoor barrels and cubes, with electric or wood-fired heaters.
A session works a bit like light exercise for your circulation: heart rate climbs to roughly 100–150 beats per minute, blood vessels widen, and blood pressure dips afterward. The long-term evidence comes from Finland, where sauna use is ordinary rather than a wellness trend.
How strong is the evidence?
Moderate evidenceIn 2,315 Finnish men followed for about 20 years, using a sauna 4–7 times a week was linked to about 40% lower all-cause mortality than once a week, and the same research group has linked frequent use to less stroke, hypertension and dementia. Small randomized trials of repeated heat show better artery function and blood pressure, which fits. But these are observational data, mostly from one research group in one region, using hot traditional saunas (~79°C, ~14-minute sessions); no trial shows sauna use itself extends life.

Linked to fewer heart deaths and a longer life
Holds upThe association is large and held after adjusting for fitness, smoking and income. It is observational, though: frequent users may differ in ways that weren't measured, so 'adds years to your life' goes beyond the data.
Lowers blood pressure
MixedPressure dips for a while after each session, an 8-week heat trial lowered it modestly, and cohort data link frequent use to less hypertension. It isn't a treatment for high blood pressure.
Protects against dementia

Detoxes your body through sweat

What to look for
- A heater sized to the room's volume (the maker should state the range) so it actually reaches 80°C or more and recovers quickly after the door opens.
- Enough stones to throw water on, if you want the traditional bursts of steam.
- Electrical safety certification (a UL or ETL listing in North America, CE or UKCA in Europe). Larger electric heaters usually need a dedicated circuit fitted by an electrician.
- Ventilation: a fresh-air inlet and an outlet, so the air doesn't go stale.
- Benches high enough that your head sits in the hot air, made of wood that stays comfortable to touch, and a thermometer at head height so you know your dose.
- For outdoor barrels and cubes: insulation and weatherproofing for the seasons you'll use it in.
- A size and location you'll use often. In the Finnish data, frequency mattered more than anything else.
What to skip
- 'Detox' and calorie-burn claims: neither holds up.
- Salt walls, colour-light therapy and 'negative ions': atmosphere at most, with no health outcome shown.
- Paying extra for built-in red-light or 'full-spectrum' add-ons in a traditional sauna. The heat is the part with evidence.
- Very high maximum temperatures as a selling point. The studied sessions averaged about 79°C, and hotter isn't shown to be better.
How to use it
- Start with 5–10 minutes on a lower bench and build toward 15–20 minutes over a few weeks.
- Aim for frequency over length: the Finnish associations were strongest at 4–7 sessions a week.
- Drink water before and after; a session can sweat out around half a litre.
- Get out straight away if you feel dizzy, nauseous or confused, or get palpitations or a headache.
- Stand up slowly at the end, because blood pressure dips right after a session. Cool down gradually, and skip icy plunges if you have heart disease.
- If you use it in the evening, finish an hour or two before bed.
Who should be careful
- Alcohol is the biggest avoidable risk: about half of people who died in Finnish saunas between 1990 and 2002 had been drinking. Don't drink before or during.
- Get your doctor's go-ahead first if you have unstable angina, a recent heart attack, severe aortic stenosis, decompensated heart failure, uncontrolled or very low blood pressure, or a history of fainting. Many people with stable heart disease can use a sauna, but that's a decision to make with your cardiologist.
- Medicines that lower blood pressure or fluid (diuretics, beta-blockers, nitrates, alpha-blockers) raise fainting risk, and some drugs impair sweating. Heat can make medication patches, especially fentanyl, release a dangerous dose.
- Pregnancy: avoid raising your core temperature to about 39°C (102°F) or higher, especially early on, and talk to your clinician before any use.
- Trying to conceive: in a small study, twice-weekly saunas for three months lowered sperm counts, which took about six months to recover.
- Supervise children and keep their sessions shorter and cooler. Skip it when you're feverish or acutely ill.

In 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men followed for a median of about 20 years, sauna use 4–7 times a week was associated with lower sudden cardiac death, fatal heart disease and all-cause mortality than once a week, after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors.

In 1,628 Finnish men and women aged 53–74 followed for a median of 14.9 years, 4–7 sauna sessions a week was associated with a 61% lower risk of stroke than one session (HR 0.39), after adjusting for risk factors, physical activity and socioeconomic status.

In 20 young sedentary adults, 8 weeks of repeated hot-water immersion (4–5 times a week, raising core temperature to at least 38.5°C) improved artery dilation, arterial stiffness and mean blood pressure (83 to 78 mmHg) compared with thermoneutral immersion.
