Salvia officinalis Extract (Sage Leaf)

Also known as: Siberius™, Common Sage Extract, Garden Sage Extract, Sage Leaf Extract

C
Evidence

Salvia officinalis (common sage) leaf extract standardized to rosmarinic acid has been traditionally used to support cognitive function and memory, with emerging evidence suggesting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties relevant to neuroprotection.

Primary uses

  • Cognitive support
  • Memory enhancement
  • Antioxidant support
  • Neuroprotection

How it works

  • Rosmarinic acid provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
  • May inhibit acetylcholinesterase, supporting cholinergic signaling
  • Polyphenol-mediated neuroprotection against oxidative stress

Dosage

Typical range
300-600 mg daily (of standardized extract)
Timing
Morning or with meals
With food
May be taken with or without food; rosmarinic acid absorption may be improved with dietary fat
Duration
Safe for long-term use; benefits may develop over 4-8 weeks of consistent use
Special populations
Generally well-tolerated; limited safety data in pregnancy and lactation—use with caution or avoid

Forms

  • Capsule· 70/100
  • Standardized extract powder· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Rare; generally well-tolerated at recommended doses
  • Possible mild gastrointestinal effects or headache in sensitive individuals

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and lactation (insufficient safety data)
  • Individuals with seizure disorders (sage may have proconvulsant properties at very high doses)
  • Those with thujone sensitivity (traditional sage contains low levels of thujone)

Evidence notes

Sage extract has moderate traditional use and some clinical studies support cognitive benefits, but high-quality RCT evidence in humans remains limited. Rosmarinic acid standardization is favorable for consistency, but the body of evidence is not yet robust enough for grade B.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
