Rauwolscine

Also known as: alpha-yohimbine, isomer of yohimbine, Rauwolfia vomitoria extract, 95% rauwolscine

C
Evidence

Rauwolscine is an alkaloid from Rauwolfia vomitoria that acts as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist, structurally similar to yohimbine but with potential distinct pharmacological properties. It is used for thermogenesis and fat loss support.

Primary uses

  • Thermogenic support
  • Fat mobilization
  • Energy enhancement
  • Performance support

How it works

  • Alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonism
  • Inhibition of negative feedback on norepinephrine release
  • Increased sympathomimetic activity
  • Enhanced fat oxidation and metabolic rate

Dosage

Typical range
2-5 mg daily
Timing
Morning or early afternoon, away from bedtime
With food
Can be taken with or without food; consistent timing recommended
Duration
Typically used for 8-12 week cycles with breaks; long-term safety data is limited
Special populations
Avoid in individuals with cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, or anxiety disorders; not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding

Forms

  • Standardized extract (95% rauwolscine)· 70/100

Safety

Common side effects

  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbance
  • Tremor or restlessness
  • Nausea or GI upset

Contraindications

  • Hypertension or cardiovascular disease
  • Arrhythmias or heart conditions
  • Anxiety or panic disorders
  • Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Kidney or liver dysfunction
  • Concurrent use with stimulants or certain psychiatric medications

Evidence notes

Limited direct human evidence compared to yohimbine. Most data is derived from in vitro studies and pharmacological theory. Some animal studies support thermogenic effects, but robust RCT data in humans is lacking.

Grade C: Mostly observational or small trials; mechanism is plausible but unproven at scale.
