Organic Broccoli Sprout
Also known as: broccoli sprout extract, broccoli sprout powder, sulforaphane source
Young broccoli plants rich in glucosinolates that convert to sulforaphane, a potent plant compound with antioxidant and phase II enzyme-inducing properties. Sprouts contain 20–50× the sulforaphane content of mature broccoli.
Primary uses
- Antioxidant support
- Phase II detoxification enzyme activation
- Anti-inflammatory response
- Cellular protection
How it works
- Glucosinolate → sulforaphane conversion
- Nrf2 pathway activation
- Phase II enzyme induction (GST, SOD)
- Histone deacetylase inhibition
Dosage
- Typical range
- 500–2000 mg daily (whole sprout) or 50–500 mg sulforaphane content
- Timing
- With meals; raw or lightly cooked to preserve myrosinase
- With food
- With food; presence of myrosinase enzyme aids conversion
- Duration
- Safe for continuous use; sulforaphane effects accumulate over weeks
- Special populations
- Those with thyroid disease should consult provider about high intake of raw cruciferous
Forms
- powder· 70/100
- capsule· 70/100
- freeze-dried extract· 70/100
- fresh sprout· 70/100
Safety
Common side effects
- Mild GI symptoms (bloating, gas) at high doses
Contraindications
- High intakes of raw cruciferous may interfere with iodine absorption in iodine-deficient individuals
Evidence notes
Good evidence for phase II enzyme induction and antioxidant support, particularly when containing active myrosinase for sulforaphane generation. Human trials are limited but mechanisms well-characterized.
Grade B: Some human trials support key claims; further confirmation needed.
