Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)

The topical antioxidant with the best evidence, if the formula is right: pure L-ascorbic acid at 10-20% and below pH 3.5, protected from air and light.
What it is
L-ascorbic acid is the active form of vitamin C. In skin it neutralizes free radicals made by UV and pollution, is a required cofactor for building collagen, and slows melanin production. The catch is chemistry: it is unstable in water, turns yellow-brown as it oxidizes, and only crosses the skin's outer layer when the product is acidic.
The key absorption work (Pinnell 2001, on pig skin) found L-ascorbic acid entered skin only at pH below 3.5, absorption rose up to about 20% and not beyond, and skin levels stayed up for days after stopping. A label that just says "vitamin C" may mean pure ascorbic acid or a derivative, so check the ingredient list.
How strong is the evidence?
Moderate evidenceSmall randomized, vehicle-controlled trials (about 20-40 people, 3-6 months) found 5-10% vitamin C creams improved fine lines, roughness and tone in sun-damaged skin, and lab studies show it reduces UV damage markers. Trials are small and formulations vary widely, so one product's results don't transfer to another. It absorbs almost no UV, so it is not a sunscreen.

Don't combine with
- Strong acid exfoliants or retinoids in the same step if your skin stings — use vitamin C in the morning and the others at night
Who should be careful
- The low pH means stinging and redness are common at first; start every other day or with a lower strength.
- A serum that has turned dark orange or brown has oxidized and lost much of its activity, and can leave a temporary yellow-orange tint on skin.

L-ascorbic acid entered pig skin only when formulated below pH 3.5, with absorption maximal at 20%; skin levels saturated after three daily applications and fell with a half-life of about 4 days. Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate and dehydroascorbic acid did not raise skin vitamin C levels.

In a 6-month double-blind trial on the neck and arms of women with photoaged skin, 5% vitamin C cream improved clinical scores, skin microrelief and deep furrows versus its base cream, with biopsy evidence of elastic tissue repair.

Reviews topical vitamin C's antioxidant, photoprotective, collagen-supporting and anti-pigment actions, and concludes that clinical efficacy studies remain limited, with stability and penetration the main formulation challenges.

Adding ferulic acid to a 15% L-ascorbic acid + 1% alpha-tocopherol solution improved its chemical stability and doubled its protection of skin against solar-simulated UV (from about 4-fold to about 8-fold), measured by redness and sunburn cells; thymine dimer formation was also reduced.
