Bisabolol

The main calming compound in chamomile oil, added to sensitive-skin, shaving and after-sun products. Anti-inflammatory in lab work; little human trial data.
What it is
Alpha-bisabolol is a fragrant alcohol that makes up much of German chamomile essential oil; it is also obtained from the candeia tree or made synthetically. It reduces inflammation and irritation in lab and animal models and can help other ingredients penetrate skin.
It is usually a supporting ingredient in products for sensitive skin, redness, shaving and after-sun, typically below 1%.
How strong is the evidence?
Weak evidenceEvidence is mainly from cell and animal studies plus manufacturer testing of blends. Independent controlled trials of bisabolol alone on human skin conditions are scarce.
