Omega-3 Components
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) + EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)
EPA drives anti-inflammatory action; DHA is the brain structural fat. Together they cover the two distinct clinical uses of fish oil.
Fatty Acid
A long-chain omega-3 fatty acid critical for brain structure and function. DHA is the predominant structural fatty acid in the brain and retina.
Full DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) profile →Fatty Acid
EPA is a long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid with strong evidence supporting cardiovascular and inflammatory benefits. It is commonly used for heart health, triglyceride reduction, and cognitive support.
Full EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) profile →Why they work together
The two major long-chain omega-3s work on different targets. EPA competes with arachidonic acid for COX/LOX enzymes, shifting eicosanoid production toward less-inflammatory signaling molecules — this is the cardiovascular and mood mechanism. DHA is the structural fat in neuron cell membranes, retinal photoreceptors, and sperm — the brain/eye/reproductive story. Taking both at typical fish-oil ratios covers both mechanisms without having to pick. Natural fish has both; supplement formulations vary the ratio.
How to dose them
1–3 g combined EPA+DHA daily with food (fat-containing meal improves absorption). For anti-inflammatory or mood: tilt EPA-dominant (55:25 or higher). For brain/eye/pregnancy: tilt DHA-dominant. Most balanced fish oils (18:12 or similar) serve general use.
Evidence
Among the best-evidenced supplements in existence. Meta-analyses of cardiovascular outcomes, depression adjunct, triglyceride reduction all converge on clinical benefit at 2+ g daily.
Watch-outs
Mild anticoagulant effect at high doses (3+ g combined) — watch with blood thinners. Choose IFOS-certified products or brands with published heavy-metal testing (fish accumulate mercury). Fish oil oxidizes fast — refrigerate after opening, smell-test before using older bottles.
