Resistance bands & suspension trainers: does it work?
Elastic bands, tubes, hip circles and suspension straps: cheap, portable resistance that has built strength about as well as weights in the trials so far.
What it is
Resistance bands come as long loop 'superbands', tubes with handles and a door anchor, small mini-bands and fabric hip circles. Suspension trainers are straps you hang from an anchor; they use your bodyweight, and you make them harder by changing your body angle.
A band gets harder the further it stretches, so the load is light at the start of a movement and heavy at the end. That doesn't stop it working. What matters is taking sets close to failure and progressing over time: a thicker band, a longer stretch, or more reps.
How strong is the evidence?
Moderate evidenceA 2019 meta-analysis of 8 trials found elastic resistance and conventional weights (machines, dumbbells) produced similar strength gains. A 2013 meta-analysis of 11 trials in adults aged 60–79 found large strength gains compared with no training. The trials are small and short, few measured muscle size directly, and building maximal barbell strength still takes heavier loads.

What to look for
- A graded set. Several resistances, light to heavy, so you can match each exercise and keep progressing. Legs need far more resistance than shoulders.
- The right format for the job. Tubes with handles and a door anchor for presses and rows. Long loop bands for pull-up assistance or adding resistance to barbell lifts. Mini-bands and fabric hip circles for side-to-side hip work.
- Build quality. Layered latex loops are generally more durable than moulded ones. Tubes should have protective sleeves, and clips and anchors should be solid.
- Latex-free material (fabric or TPE) if you or anyone in your home has a latex allergy.
- Suspension trainers: a secure anchor (door, beam or frame) rated well above your bodyweight, and straps that lock firmly at each length.
- Fabric or rubber hip bands. Fabric doesn't roll up or pinch and lasts longer. Rubber is cheaper and gives smoother resistance.
What to skip
- 'Equivalent to X lb of dumbbells' marketing: how heavy a band feels depends on the stretch, so the number can't be compared.
- Huge 11-plus-piece kits: you'll use a handful. Put the money into a few good bands.
- 'Glute activation' programs sold as the key to a bigger squat.
How to use it
- Pick a band that makes the last few reps hard within your chosen rep range (for example, 10–20 reps).
- Progress by moving to a heavier band, stepping further from the anchor, doubling up bands, or slowing the lowering.
- Control the return; don't let the band pull you back.
- For pull-up assistance, move to lighter bands as you get stronger, until you can do reps unassisted.
Who should be careful
- Latex allergy: rubber bands can trigger reactions, so choose fabric or latex-free bands.
- Bands can snap. Before each use, check for nicks, tears and sticky or chalky patches, store them away from sunlight and heat, and never stretch one toward your face. Snapped bands and failed anchors cause eye and facial injuries.
- Door anchors: fit them on the hinge side of a door that closes away from you, and make sure nobody can open it mid-set.
- Suspension trainers: test that the anchor holds with a small lean before putting your full weight on it.
