Hyperbaric chamber: does it work?
Breathing oxygen under pressure. A proven hospital treatment for specific conditions like decompression sickness; home soft chambers aren't that, and longevity use is unproven.
What it is
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) means breathing close to 100% oxygen while the pressure around you is raised, usually to 2–3 times normal atmospheric pressure, in a hospital-grade chamber. That drives far more oxygen into your blood, and it's an established treatment for a short list of conditions, from decompression sickness to carbon monoxide poisoning and some non-healing wounds.
Most chambers sold for homes and wellness clinics are different. Soft-sided 'mild' chambers reach about 1.3 atmospheres, usually with ordinary air or oxygen from a concentrator. Breathing air at 1.3 atmospheres raises your oxygen intake only about as much as a little supplemental oxygen at sea level, a small fraction of a clinical dose. In the US, soft chambers have been cleared for acute mountain sickness, not for wellness or anti-ageing.
How strong is the evidence?
Weak evidenceIn hospitals, recompression with oxygen is the standard treatment for decompression sickness and gas embolism, and the US FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers for about a dozen specific conditions. Even there, trial evidence varies: a Cochrane review found diabetic foot ulcers healed faster at six weeks but not at one year. For healthy people, the widely cited 'anti-ageing' study had 35 older adults, no control group, and measured telomeres in blood cells rather than ageing itself. Home soft chambers deliver a much smaller dose and have no outcome trials for wellness uses.

A home soft chamber gives the same benefits as hospital HBOT
FalseAbout 1.3 atmospheres of air versus 2–3 atmospheres of pure oxygen is a very different dose, and the clinical evidence comes from the latter.
What to look for
- For a medical condition: treatment at an accredited hyperbaric facility with a physician trained in hyperbaric medicine (in the US, look for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society accreditation).
- Confirmation that your condition is on the approved list; insurers generally cover only those uses.
- For a home soft chamber: the regulatory clearance and its actual indication, the maximum pressure, and emergency pressure-release valves you can operate from inside.
- Another person present for every session, and a plan for ear pain or panic.
- Plain claims. A seller who lists autism, cancer or anti-ageing is selling beyond any clearance.
What to skip
- Anti-ageing, telomere and 'stem-cell boosting' protocols.
- Oxygen concentrators sold with soft chambers. The chambers weren't cleared for use with added oxygen, which raises fire risk inside an enclosure not built for it, for a benefit that's never been shown.
- Hard-shell 'home' chambers marketed for wellness. Clinical pressures carry clinical risks and need clinical supervision.
- Wellness-clinic packages of dozens of sessions for conditions not on the approved list.
Who should be careful
- Ear and sinus pressure injury is the most common problem. Don't go in with a cold, blocked sinuses or after recent ear surgery, and stop if you can't equalize.
- An untreated collapsed lung (pneumothorax) rules HBOT out; severe lung disease with air trapping, uncontrolled seizures and some chemotherapy drugs need specialist review.
- Fire is the catastrophic risk in oxygen-rich chambers: no electronics, hand warmers, lighters or oil-based products inside. A child died in a hyperbaric chamber fire at a US clinic in 2025.
- Many sessions at clinical pressures can temporarily change your eyesight (short-sightedness), and oxygen toxicity can rarely cause seizures.
- Discuss it first if you're pregnant, claustrophobic, or struggle to clear your ears.
- For suspected carbon monoxide poisoning or decompression sickness, call emergency services. Don't treat it at home.

Reviews decompression illness in divers, aviators and others: first aid is 100% oxygen, definitive treatment is recompression breathing 100% oxygen, and treatment is usually effective, though serious cases can leave lasting deficits.

Across 12 trials (577 people), HBOT improved healing of diabetic foot ulcers at six weeks (RR 2.35) but not at one year, with no significant difference in major amputations; trial flaws limited confidence.

Thirty-five healthy adults aged 64 and over received 60 daily HBOT sessions; telomere length in several blood immune-cell types rose by more than 20% and some senescent T-cell counts fell. There was no control group, and no clinical outcomes were measured.
