Cooling Pads: does it work?
Gel and fabric pads feel cool only briefly; water or air systems keep cooling all night. A cool room does most of the work, and pads fine-tune it.
What it is
There are three groups. Passive gel mats and 'cool-touch' or phase-change fabrics feel cool until they warm to your skin temperature. Wicking pads and sheets move sweat away so you feel less clammy. Active systems pump chilled water through a pad or blow air under the covers all night.
Heat and humidity under the covers are what wake hot sleepers, so the aim is to let heat and moisture escape, not to feel cold at bedtime.
How strong is the evidence?
Limited evidenceLab studies show that drawing heat away through the mattress modestly increases deep sleep: first in 15 young men, then in a three-centre study of 72 adults, a high-heat-capacity mattress increased slow-wave sleep and lowered heart rate. Reviews of thermal studies show that heat, and especially humid heat, increases waking. Trials of specific consumer cooling pads are few, small and often funded by the makers.

What to look for
- Start with the room: around 18°C (65°F), a fan, and lighter bedding.
- For heavy sweating: breathable, wicking layers rather than a waterproof or thick foam surface.
- For active systems: noise, temperature range, dual-zone control, water upkeep and any subscription cost.
- Washability and a fit that suits your mattress depth.
What to skip
- 'Space technology' and 'X degrees cooler' claims. A cool-to-touch reading doesn't tell you how you'll sleep.
- A gel topper bought to fix a hot memory-foam mattress. The foam still traps heat.
Who should be careful
- New night sweats with fever or weight loss, or sweats that repeatedly soak the bed, need a medical check.
- Don't use active cooling for babies, and take care if you have poor circulation, Raynaud's or reduced sensation.
- For water-based systems, keep the unit on a stable surface and check hoses for leaks.

15 healthy young men slept in the lab on a high- or low-heat-capacity mattress. The high-heat-capacity mattress lowered core temperature slightly (up to 0.28°C), increased slow-wave sleep by 16% and improved rated sleep quality.
