Blue Light Glasses: does it work?

Clear 'computer' lenses do nothing proven for eye strain or sleep. Amber lenses worn before bed have small trials behind them, but dimming the lights does much the same.

What it is

Two different products share the name. Clear or lightly tinted 'blue-light' lenses, sold for screen use, filter a slice of blue light. Amber or orange blue-blocking glasses, worn in the last hours before bed, block most short-wavelength light, the kind that most strongly suppresses melatonin and pushes your body clock later.

Screens are only one source of evening light; overhead lighting and overall brightness matter too. Dimming lights and screens in the evening does much of what the glasses promise.

How strong is the evidence?

Weak evidence

A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 small trials found blue-filtering lenses may not reduce eye strain from screens, and their effect on sleep is uncertain (six trials split evenly, very low certainty). Small trials of amber lenses worn for 2 hours before bed are more encouraging: in 14 people with insomnia symptoms, a week of amber lenses improved sleep ratings compared with clear placebo lenses. No trial has shown any benefit for macular or retinal health.

The Cochrane review found little or no difference from ordinary lenses (low-certainty evidence). Screen breaks and correcting your prescription do more.

They protect your eyes from damage by screen light

Unproven

No trial has shown a benefit to retinal or macular health, and screen light levels aren't known to damage the retina.

What to look for

  • For sleep: amber or orange lenses with a published transmission chart showing they block most blue light (roughly 400-500 nm).
  • Wraparound frames so light doesn't reach your eyes from the sides.
  • Comfort if you'll wear them nightly, and a plan for the bright bathroom light that undoes them.
  • If you just want less glare, an anti-reflective coating on your normal glasses is enough.

What to skip

  • Clear 'computer' lenses sold to prevent eye strain or protect the retina.
  • 'Clinically proven' or 'evidence-based' on the packaging without a cited trial.
  • Blocking blue light during the day. Daytime light keeps you alert and anchors your body clock.

How to use it

  • Put amber lenses on about 2 hours before bed and keep them on until lights out.
  • Dimming room lights and screens gets you most of the way without glasses.

Who should be careful

  • Don't drive in amber or orange lenses at night. They cut light and distort colours, including traffic signals.
  • Eye strain, headaches or blurred vision deserve a proper eye test; an uncorrected prescription is a common cause.
  • Trials occasionally reported headaches, discomfort and low mood with blue-blocking lenses. Stop if they don't suit you.

    14 adults with insomnia symptoms wore amber blue-blocking or clear placebo lenses for 2 hours before bed for a week each. Amber lenses improved insomnia ratings, subjective sleep quality and total sleep time.

    29 publications including 16 RCTs (453 patients) of evening amber glasses. The authors found good support for shorter sleep onset in sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work, preliminary signals in mania, and conflicting results in depression.
