A photostable broad-spectrum filter used outside the US for 25 years. In June 2026 it became the first new US sunscreen active in about two decades (up to 6%).

What it is

Bemotrizinol absorbs across UVB and UVA (peaks near 310 and 340 nm), is very stable in sunlight, and stabilises avobenzone when the two are combined. It is a large, oil-soluble molecule (about 630 daltons), which limits how much passes through skin.

It has been allowed in the EU (up to 10%), Australia and Asia since around 2000. In June 2026 the FDA issued a final order adding it to the US sunscreen monograph at up to 6% for adults and children aged 6 months and older, the first addition since the late 1990s.

Its broad-spectrum absorption and photostability are well documented in formulation testing, and FDA's 2026 review found it safe and effective with low absorption through skin. Long-term clinical outcome trials exist for sunscreens in general, not for this filter specifically.
